Gujarat MBBS Student Dies Allegedly Due to Ragging; 15 Seniors Named in FIR

Anil Methania, an 18-year-old first-year MBBS student at GMERS Medical College and Hospital in Dharpur Patan, Gujarat, died under tragic circumstances, allegedly due to ragging by his seniors.

Gujarat MBBS Student Incident Details

Reports suggest that third-year students at the college hostel forced freshers to stand for three hours during an “introduction” session. The term “introduction” is often associated with ragging, involving harassment and intimidation of new students.

Anil collapsed after standing for three hours and was immediately rushed to the hospital. Before passing away, he informed the police that he had been ragged.

His body has been sent for a post-mortem, and the autopsy report is expected to provide clarity on the cause of death.

Family Response

Anil’s cousin Dharmendra stated that the family lives in Surendranagar, over 150 km from the college.
“We received a call from the college saying Anil had fainted and was hospitalised. When we arrived, we were told that third-year students had ragged him. We want justice,” he said.

College and Police Response

The dean of the medical college, Hardik Shah, said,
“As soon as we heard about the incident, we ensured Anil was hospitalised. He told the police that he was ragged and made to stand for three hours. We have informed the authorities and his family and will take strict action against those involved.”

Senior police officer KK Pandya confirmed that Anil’s father had filed a complaint, and a case of accidental death has been registered.
“The autopsy has been conducted, and we have requested a detailed medical report. Based on its findings, further action will be taken,” he said.

Additionally, the police have sought a detailed report from the college regarding the ragging allegations. According to PTI, 15 senior students have been named in the FIR.

Ragging: A Persistent Issue

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has strictly prohibited ragging in all its forms on higher education campuses. Institutions are mandated to take stringent action against individuals involved in ragging or aiding such activities.

This tragic incident highlights the need for stronger enforcement of anti-ragging policies to ensure the safety and well-being of students.

Authorities continue to investigate the case, while Anil’s grieving family awaits justice for their heartbreaking loss.
