Dhanteras is also popularly known as Dhantrayodashi and is a very important festival of Hindus. It takes place two days before the festival of Diwali. It is the time when Goddess Lakshmi (goddess of wealth), Lord Kuber (god of wealth), and Lord Dhanvantari (god of Ayurveda and health) are all worshipped. It’s not a good day for buying gold, silver, and utensils. This year Dhantrayodashi will take place on Tuesday, the 29th of October, 2024.

Significance of Dhantrayodashi

Dhanteras is the first day of the five-day festival Diwali. It occurs on the thirteenth day of the Krishna Paksha in Kartik month, that is, in October-November. The festival is considered a day of wealth and prosperity. Devotees believe that worshipping Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber on this day brings fortune and abundance.

Traditionally, families get their homes cleaned and decked up for Diwali, marking the cleasing of the mind as well as soul. To ward off untimely death and save loved ones, the festival also mandates lighting lamps for Yama Deepam.
