Five years after fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, China is now battling a new health crisis with the rapid spread of the human metapneumovirus (HMPV). The virus, known for causing symptoms akin to flu and COVID-19, is creating significant strain on healthcare facilities across the nation. According to the state broadcaster CCTV, the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration will have a process that laboratories can follow in reporting their cases so that disease control and prevention agencies can verify and manage them.

Data released for the period between December 16 and 22 reveals an uptrend in respiratory infections. Officials warned that chances of increased cases in this winter and spring period will increase. Kan Biao, official addressing at a news conference, said overall cases this year will be lesser than that witnessed last year, but the challenge from respiratory infectious diseases is going to remain immense.

The human metapneumovirus has been the most critical concern in this outbreak, particularly in northern provinces affecting those under 14 years of age.
